You Were Warned

Delays have dangerous ends - 1st release

Under the clouds rolling in off the coast, a warning pulse reverberates through the earth. Something is coming…

A spacious ambient guitar loop circling back when we least expect it, bringing occasional light through the dark clouds of implied static and thunder. Keyboards pulse through the piece, occasionally throwing melodic lines out to hold onto the weatherscape. Towards the end, the sonar picks up an approaching unidentified mass, signalling impending doom.

You Were Warned has arrived....

Von Black tells a tale of a time in the 80s when all the kids who played piano in her town seemed obsessed with learning to play Chariots of Fire (a piece she thought was a bit normal). But she'd find herself accidentally referencing it in her improvisations, turning it around, reinventing it. Decades later she still finds various Vangelis themes influencing her experiments. Vangelis melodies and chord choices seemed annoyingly obvious sometimes - but they created epic landscapes and have deep hooks into how humans feel music. Syres' guitar takes this cue and soars through Von Black's technicolour chords - at times a singing baritone, a percussive forest and a sonic flight.

About

landscapes of dark textures

it's not for every day - it's for every night

"Once upon an apocalypse, Vangelis and Alexander Hacke had unprotected sex and the spawn of their reptilian egg (which had two yolks) formed a sonic duo of soaring proportions who took you into the kind of sonic hell where Brian Eno will finally rest after the great Enocalypse of 2157. Ladies and mutants, this is Delays Have Dangerous Ends."

Delays Have Dangerous Ends is the project of Matthew Syres and Genevieve Von Black, Australian improvisers driving music trains head first across multiple genres - bending guitar and keys into hypnotic and powerful mantras. Syres brings years of experimental and post rock to the fray. Von Black injects mashups of jazz, doom and influences from heavy rock and heavy classical.

Between them they bring their love of all the dark things together with instrumental narrative in a long-form improvisation format. Think Bohren and der Club of Gore, The Necks, Nick Cave, Alister Spence, Joseph Tawardros, Saint Vitus, Earth, Oren Ambarchi, Alice Coltrane, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Cluster, Sunn O))), Merzbow, films and Nordic noir.

Delays Have Dangerous Ends formed in the bleak Sydney autumn of 2022. It started with an improvisation riffing from a doomjazz idea and responding to the ravens singing outside in the fading afternoon light. Delays Have Dangerous Ends listeners are immersed in landscapes like this, travelling from the sublimely beautiful to darkly epic.
